What each record type tells you.

Read left to right when auditing a new domain.

A / AAAA

Address

IPv4 and IPv6 endpoints. A missing AAAA is fine; an unexpected A often means a forgotten host.

MX

Mail exchange

Which servers accept mail, in priority order. No MX means the domain cannot receive mail.

NS

Name servers

Who is authoritative. Mismatched NS between registrar and zone causes intermittent failures.

CNAME

Alias

Points at another hostname. A target that no longer resolves is a takeover risk.

TXT

Text

Holds SPF, DKIM, DMARC and verification strings. Two SPF records here is an immediate error.

SOA

Start of authority

Serial and timers for the zone. A stale serial hints at edits that never propagated.

CAA

Certificate authority

Restricts which CAs may issue certificates. Absent means any CA can.

PTR

Reverse

Maps an IP back to a name. Sending mail without matching PTR hurts deliverability.

5 domains by hand, or every domain every day.

ZeroHook watches DNS across your whole portfolio, flags dangling CNAMEs and takeover risk, and keeps an audit trail of every change.
